4 best tips to enamel your pieces

Glazing is one of the most important phases in ceramics, as it defines the texture, color, and final finish of the piece. However, applying too much glaze can cause defects such as drips, bubbles, or an uneven appearance. If you want to achieve a perfect finish, follow these tips for applying glaze layers without overloading your ceramics.

1. Choose the right glaze

Not all glazes have the same viscosity or react the same to firing. Before applying, make sure that:

Be well diluted and mixed.

Have the right consistency for the technique you are going to use.

Be compatible with the clay and firing temperature.

2. Techniques for applying thin and even layers

Quick dipping

Dipping the piece in the glaze for 1-2 seconds ensures even coverage. If you need a second layer, wait for the first to be completely dry.

Airbrush or spraying

Ideal for achieving thin and homogeneous layers. Spray the glaze in smooth and constant movements at an appropriate distance to avoid accumulations.

Controlled brushing

Use soft brushes and apply thin layers in even movements. If necessary, dilute the glaze to avoid visible brush marks.

Pouring glazing

Pour the glaze over the piece in a continuous motion and let the excess drip off. This technique is perfect for high-viscosity glazes.

3. Keys to avoid excess glaze

Apply thin layers and let dry between each one.

Test the absorption of the piece: a very porous clay can absorb too much glaze and overload the surface.

Control the density of the glaze: If it is too thick, dilute it slightly with water or the appropriate medium.

4. Review before firing

Before taking your pieces to the kiln, check:

That the glaze is not accumulated on the edges or base.

That there are no areas with drips or visible bubbles.

That the surface is uniform and free of irregularities.

A balanced glazing highlights the beauty of the ceramic without affecting the shape or texture of the piece. With the right techniques and a little patience, you will achieve professional finishes without overloading your creations. Experiment and find the method that best suits your style!
